Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has emerged as a fundamental instrument in environmental planning and decision-making processes across the globe. It provides a structured and systematic approach for identifying, predicting, and evaluating the potential environmental, social, and economic impacts of proposed development activities prior to their implementation. This review paper examines the current state of the art in Environmental Impact Assessment by tracing its historical evolution, reviewing contemporary methodologies, and analyzing its application across various development sectors. The paper highlights recent advancements in EIA practice, including the increasing integration of sustainable development principles, enhanced stakeholder and public participation, and the growing use of technological tools such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and Decision Support Systems (DSS). These innovations have significantly improved the accuracy, transparency, and efficiency of environmental assessments, enabling better-informed and more accountable decision-making.

The review concludes by emphasizing the need for continuous improvement in EIA practices through stronger legal frameworks, capacity building, methodological innovation, and greater integration with sustainability and climate change considerations. Addressing these issues is essential to enhance the role of EIA as a proactive tool for promoting environmentally responsible and sustainable development.
