Abstract

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI), launched in 2016 by the National Payments Corporation of India, has completed a decade of remarkable growth, marking a significant milestone in India’s digital payment journey. This study is conducted in the context of UPI’s decade completion, analyzing its evolution from a low-adoption platform to a globally leading real-time payment system between 2016 and 2026. It examines year-wise growth in transaction volume, value, and bank participation to understand the scale and pace of expansion.

The study highlights key drivers such as increasing smartphone penetration, affordable internet access, supportive government initiatives, and the rise of fintech applications. It also evaluates UPI’s economic impact, including reduced reliance on cash, growth of the digital economy, enhanced financial inclusion, and support to small businesses. Additionally, major events like the Demonetisation in India 2016 and the COVID-19 pandemic are examined for their role in accelerating adoption.

Overall, the study underscores UPI’s decade-long success as a transformative innovation and its continued potential to strengthen India’s cashless and digitally empowered economy.
