Abstract

The Indian steel industry is the second-largest producer of crude steel in the world yet its leading firms are operated during volatile raw-material and product prices, rising import penetration, and a costly shift to low-carbon production. Their competitive performance and financial strength show wide variation, and the literature provides little integrated, firm-level evidence on which strategic practices sustain competitive advantage. This study compares the five leading Indian integrated producers, Tata Steel, JSW Steel, SAIL, JSPL, and ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), from FY2021-22 to FY2024-25. Using audited annual and integrated reports, Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reports, and data from the Ministry of Steel, this paper applies five converging techniques: uniform financial ratio analysis, a weighted composite benchmarking scorecard, SWOT analysis, cost-benefit analysis, and coordinate positioning. The findings show that the largest producers are not the most profitable. JSPL, the smallest listed firm, records the highest margins and the lowest leverage and leads the composite scorecard while Tata Steel and JSW Steel, the scale leaders, rank behind it. Competitive advantage in the sector is associated with cost discipline, balance-sheet conservatism, working-capital efficiency, and captive raw-material integration rather than scale alone. The paper provides firm-specific recommendations and sets out directions for further research.
