Abstract

Mutual fund distribution in India has expanded rapidly over the last decade, driven by rising Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) participation, deepening penetration into Tier-2/Tier-3 towns, and the emergence of National Distributors (NDs) that recruit and support large networks of individual Mutual Fund Distributors (MFDs). This paper examines how one such National Distributor, NJ Wealth (NJ India Invest Pvt. Ltd.), grows its distributor network, drawing on a two-month internship carried out at its Ratlam branch between 18 May and 18 July 2026. The study combines a review of the Indian mutual fund distribution industry, an analysis of NJ Wealth's business model and competitive position, and first-hand observations from telecalling, Business Opportunity Presentation (BOP) delivery, and field visits to Chartered Accountants (CAs) and tax consultants undertaken as prospective distributor-partners. The paper finds that professionals with pre-existing client trust particularly CAs and tax consultants convert into distributor-partners at a comparatively higher rate than cold-called prospects, and that proactive SIP-status coordination helps reduce lapses among existing distributors' clients. Based on these observations, the paper recommends that NJ Wealth formally prioritise the CA/tax-consultant segment for partner acquisition, invest in a CRM-based follow-up system, and introduce automated SIP-lapse alerts. The study is exploratory and based on a single branch over a limited period; its findings are directional rather than statistically generalisable, and the underlying primary data reported here should be read as illustrative pending confirmation against the author's own field records.

Keywords: mutual fund distribution, distributor network growth, NJ Wealth, Systematic Investment Plan (SIP), Business Opportunity Presentation (BOP), Tier-2/3 markets, financial inclusion.
