Abstract

India’s export landscape is shaped by distinct regional strengths, each contributing uniquely to the country’s trade portfolio. This study employs the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) framework to analyse the export competitiveness of the top 10 merchandise-exporting states from FY2018 to FY2025. Using data from the Niryat Portal, the research calculates RCA indices across a wide range of commodity groups, identifying established and emerging export-strength sectors. The findings highlight West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh as the most diversified sectors with RCA >1, while states like Telangana and Odisha exhibit focused specialisation in high-performing industries such as pharmaceuticals and minerals, respectively. The study not only maps regional export patterns but also sheds light on structural vulnerabilities and potential for export diversification. The insights serve as a foundation for strategic trade policy formulation, emphasising the need for state-specific interventions to bolster India’s global trade position.
