Abstract

Uttrakhand, carved out from Uttar Pradesh in 2000, is a Himalayan state marked by unique geographical, cultural, and socioeconomic characteristics. Over the past few decades, rural Uttrakhand has undergone profound transformations due to migration, modernization, agricultural change, tourism, education, and state policy interventions. This paper examines how these forces have reshaped rural social structures, livelihoods, family systems, gender roles, caste relations, and cultural patterns. Drawing upon secondary literature, government reports, and theoretical frameworks of rural transformation, the study highlights both opportunities and challenges in the transition of rural society in Uttrakhand. It argues that while modernization and mobility have opened avenues for empowerment and growth, they have also stressed traditional systems, intensified outmigration, and created new forms of vulnerability among marginalized groups.
