Abstract
Various spatial and hydrological factors are considered for the purpose of flood susceptibility modeling. Factors such as Digital Elevation Model (DEM), slope, drainage density, land use and land cover (LULC), rainfall distribution, and distance from river channels have been incorporated in this study for generating flood susceptibility thematic layers. Weighted overlay method has been used for assessing the importance of each factor. Five susceptibility zones, namely Very Low, Low, Moderate, High, and Very High zones, have been identified based on the output map produced after analysis.
It is evident from the results obtained that flood susceptibility increases in lower elevations with flat slopes, high drainage density, agricultural activities, and river proximity. On the contrary, flood susceptibility decreases in case of higher elevations and high slopes. This study has produced maps indicating flood susceptibility in the region under consideration.
It is seen from the results of this research that GIS-based flood susceptibility modeling in QGIS is a relatively cost-effective tool that can be utilized for assessing flood risks in a given region. The maps developed can be beneficial for policy makers in formulating flood risk mitigation strategies, land-use policies, and emergency measures.
