Abstract

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in India's fast-growing satellite industrial townships are increasingly turning to digital channels for visibility and growth, yet little practitioner-level evidence exists on how a small digital marketing agency actually converts a researched prospect into a paying client. This paper reports an empirical, case-study-based investigation of the brand-building, market-research, and client-acquisition process followed by Talking Crooks IT Pvt. Ltd., a digital marketing agency headquartered in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, studied through the work of a remote intern based in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Pune, who researched and acquired clients in a city different from the agency's own office. Using a descriptive and exploratory research design, primary data were collected over a two-month structured engagement comprising three sequential activities: (i) organic brand-awareness building across Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, (ii) a structured gap analysis (website, social media, Google My Business, and search-engine visibility) of 45 businesses across five categories, and (iii) direct multi-channel outreach aimed at converting researched prospects into paying clients. Of 62 prospects engaged, 24 were qualified as genuine leads, 13 progressed to a substantive discussion, and 5 converted into paying clients across website development, search engine optimisation, social media management, and e-commerce set-up. The findings indicate that structured, category-wise gap analysis produces materially higher-quality leads than unstructured outreach, that a multi-channel approach (cold email, calls/field visits, social media, and referrals) outperforms single-channel outreach, and that reaching the actual decision-maker is a stronger predictor of conversion than outreach volume or channel choice alone. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for small digital marketing agencies serving SME clients and outlines directions for future research.
