Abstract

Menopause is a natural biological transition but is often accompanied by multiple physical, psychological, and sexual health problems that impair midlife women’s quality of life. In India, rapid urbanization has created sharp contrasts between urban and rural women in terms of physical activity, diet, psychosocial stress, and access to health care, yet little district-level evidence exists from Jammu on how these differences shape menopausal experience. In this context, Akhnoor—a historic municipal town along the Chenab River—represents an urbanizing environment, whereas Miran Sahib, situated on the rural–peri‑urban fringe of Jammu city with strong agricultural linkages, provides a contrasting rural setting.

This study undertook a comparative assessment of peri- and post‑menopausal health issues among women in Akhnoor (urban) and Miran Sahib (rural). The specific objectives were to estimate and compare the prevalence of key menopausal symptoms (leg cramps, hot flashes, back pain, mood swings, and intimacy rejection) between the two strata, to examine differences in educational status and pre‑menopause age, and to apply chi‑square tests, one‑way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and linear regression to evaluate the statistical significance and patterns of urban–rural differences.
