Abstract

The economics of machining processes has remained a central concern in manufacturing engineering for decades, particularly as global competitive pressures demand tighter cost controls without sacrificing component quality or output rates. This paper presents a structured analysis of cost modeling frameworks applicable to common machining operations including turning, milling, drilling, grinding, and computer numerical control (CNC) machining. The study examines the principal cost constituents — material, labor, tooling, machine overheads, energy consumption, inspection, and scrap — and proposes analytical methods for estimating total production cost per component. Mathematical formulations derived from established machining economics literature, including Taylor's tool life equation, and are employed to evaluate the trade-off between cutting speed, tool life, and associated costs. Economic performance indicators such as break-even point, return on investment (ROI), and cost-benefit ratios are discussed in the context of both small-batch and large-volume production scenarios. Two case studies, one drawn from automotive component manufacturing and another from aerospace machining, illustrate how cost modeling can guide practical optimization decisions. The findings demonstrate that systematic cost estimation, when integrated with process parameter selection, can reduce total machining costs by 15–30% in typical production environments. This paper aims to serve as a practical reference for engineering students, production engineers, and manufacturing planners engaged in process cost analysis.

Key Words: Machining economics, cost modeling, Taylor's tool life equation, CNC machining, manufacturing cost analysis, tooling cost, break-even analysis, production optimization.
