Abstract
One of the major geotechnical challenges encountered in bridge construction worldwide is the presence of artesian groundwater conditions at foundation levels. Even low artesian pressures can destabilize foundations and threaten bridge safety. Therefore, monitoring artesian pressure and implementing measures to enhance foundation stability are of critical importance.
Compared to pile foundations, well foundations are significantly more economical, with construction costs approximately one-third lower. However, inadequate soil investigations and a shortage of skilled technical personnel often increase the risk of foundation-related failures. This study presents a unique investigation into cases of bottom plug failure in well foundations and proposes a safe and effective construction methodology for bridge foundations under artesian conditions.
