Abstract

Composite cation exchange materials have emerged as effective adsorbents for removing heavy metals from contaminated water. Water pollution caused by industrialization and urbanization has increased the concentration of toxic metals such as lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, and copper. These metals are non-biodegradable, accumulate in living organisms, and pose serious risks to human health and aquatic ecosystems. Among various treatment methods, adsorption is widely preferred because of its high efficiency, simplicity, and low operational cost.
Cation exchange materials selectively remove metal ions through ion-exchange and electrostatic interaction mechanisms .However, conventional ion exchangers often exhibit limited selectivity, low exchange capacity, and poor mechanical stability. To overcome these drawbacks, researchers have developed composite cation exchange materials by combining organic polymers with inorganic supports. These composites provide enhanced adsorption capacity, improved chemical stability, faster adsorption kinetics, and better regeneration performance. Materials such as chitosan, polystyrene, silica, alumina, and magnetic nanoparticles are commonly used to prepare these advanced adsorbents. Consequently, composite cation exchange materials offer a sustainable and efficient solution for heavy metal removal and environmental remediation.
