Abstract

The growing concern over climate change, environmental degradation and resource depletion has increased the importance of sustainable financial practices across the world. The banking sector, being an important intermediary in economic development, has a crucial role to play in promoting environmentally responsible growth. Green banking has emerged as a strategic approach through which banks integrate environmental considerations into their operations, lending decisions and investment policies. In India, green banking practices have gained momentum through digital banking services, paperless transactions, renewable energy financing, green deposits and sustainability reporting initiatives undertaken by banks. The present study examines the major green banking practices adopted by Indian banks and analyses their contribution to sustainable development. The study is based entirely on secondary data collected from Reserve Bank of India reports, annual reports of leading commercial banks, government publications, research articles and reports of various national and international institutions. The study finds that Indian banks have made considerable progress in promoting digital transactions, reducing paper consumption, financing renewable energy projects and incorporating Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles into their business strategies. However, challenges such as lack of uniform green banking standards, inadequate awareness and limited green financing mechanisms continue to hinder the pace of sustainable banking. The study suggests that stronger regulatory support, increased investment in green technologies, customer awareness and development of dedicated green financial products are essential for accelerating sustainable development in India.
